- Summary
On April 11, 2017, anti-government elements shot and killed five members of the same family in Sar-e Pul, including two children, two women, and one man. Prior to the killings, the group had illegally detained one of the women based on allegations of "immoral behavior." She had been released after community elders guaranteed her continued presence in the village while they determined her "sentence." The mass execution of the entire family represents an extreme form of collective punishment by armed groups imposing their interpretation of moral codes.
