- Summary
The so-called “Herat Uprising,” which lasted from March 15-20, 1979, was considered to be the first major people-led insurrection against the communist regime in Afghanistan. Government troops put down the uprising in a crackdown, which, some claim, led to the deaths of over 20,000 civilians.
