On June 5, 2016, David Gilkey, an NPR photographer and video editor, and his Afghan translator, Zabihullah Tamanna, were killed when the Afghan Army unit they were traveling with came under Taliban fire near Marjah in Helmand Province. The journalists were embedded with Afghan forces when the attack occurred.
