Over several days of fighting, 25 Afghan security forces and 11 civilians were killed after Taliban forces attacked Puli Khumri, the provincial capital, from two directions. Another 29 security forces and 56 civilians were injured in the fighting. The militants entered homes, killing local Afghans they accused of conspiring against them, according to a former police chief who commands a local pro-government militia. Local officials reported that Taliban fighters entered sections of the city as police officers and militiamen fought to repel them.
