On January 27, 2018, a Taliban suicide attacker detonated a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) in a van disguised as an ambulance outside a Ministry of Interior administrative compound in Kabul City. The massive explosion killed 114 civilians, including one woman, and injured 229 others, including 11 women and 10 children. The compound was located on a street housing a maternity hospital, the High Peace Council, and several embassy and private residences. The powerful blast caused extensive damage to surrounding buildings, with the hospital severely impacted and patients inside suffering injuries. The Taliban claimed responsibility for this attack, which became the single deadliest incident recorded by UNAMA since it began systematic documentation in 2009.
