On December 17, 2016, unknown gunmen shot and killed five female airport employees and their driver in Kandahar province. The women had previously received death threats from individuals who disapproved of their careers. While no group immediately claimed responsibility for this attack, the Taliban had claimed similar targeted killings of working women in the past.
