On June 23, 2018, armed men killed Sheikh Jafar Tawakkoli as he was returning home from mosque after prayers in the 64-Metre Road area of Herat City. Sheikh Tawakkoli was an important local Shia cleric who owned a radio station called Hekmat (Wisdom), represented Ayatollah Hakim (an influential Shia ayatollah based in Iraq), and was a member of the Shia ulama council. The identity of his attackers remains unknown. This assassination represents a targeted killing of a prominent religious leader from the Shia minority community.
