Taliban forces conducted a complex attack on a military base in Maruf District center before moving to the Bato area. The assault began when Taliban fighters rammed a Humvee loaded with explosives into the wall of the base, followed by a stolen police pickup truck filled with explosives driven into the facility. The attack continued with sustained fire from light and heavy weapons. Forty-five of the 60 police officers inside the base were killed, along with eight Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan employees who were reportedly at the location.
