In August 2015, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) confirmed that Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) fighters forced the closure of twenty-five educational institutions across Nangarhar Province. This action deprived 14,102 students, including 4,900 girls, of access to education and prevented 341 teachers from performing their work. During public meetings organized by ISKP, fighters threatened teachers with severe punishment if they failed to comply with orders to close schools. According to sources, some teachers received phone calls threatening their lives if they reported these threats to authorities. Other teachers were reportedly demanded to pay one month's salary to the group. The threats created significant fear and insecurity among parents, teachers, and students, resulting in substantial decreases in school attendance. As of December 31, 2015, ten educational institutions remained closed in Deh Bala District of Nangarhar Province, continuing to affect 7,087 students.
