On June 17, 2017, at around 6:30 AM, Taliban militants launched a complex attack on the police headquarters in Gardez district. The assault began when a suicide bomber detonated a car packed with explosives at the gate of the facility. Following the explosion, approximately six attackers stormed through the breach, with at least two quickly killed by police. The remaining attackers engaged in a prolonged firefight with Afghan special forces who responded to the attack. The Taliban claimed responsibility for this operation that killed at least six police officers and wounded at least 30 people, including 21 civilians who were brought to the city hospital.
