On January 10, 2017, an explosion occurred at the residence of the Kandahar Provincial Governor during a dinner event hosting visiting diplomats and dignitaries. The attack killed more than 40 people, including 13 civilians and five diplomats from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Many others were injured in the blast, including the Kandahar Governor and the visiting UAE Ambassador. No group claimed responsibility for this attack targeting both Afghan officials and international diplomats.
