- Summary
On the evening of June 28, 2011, nine Taliban militants launched a coordinated attack on the Inter-Continental Hotel in Kabul. The assailants successfully passed three security checkpoints and approached the rear of the hotel, using dense vegetation for concealment. At approximately 10:00 PM local time, the attackers initiated their assault while armed with assault rifles, hand grenades, rocket-propelled grenade launchers, machine guns, and anti-aircraft weapons. Surveillance footage captured the nine attackers entering through the rear hotel garden, an area where only two guards were stationed at the time. The attack began during a dinner event for hotel guests. Suicide vests were detonated at the hotel's entrance and on the second floor, destroying two dance halls in the initial phase of the assault. The militants then advanced to the fifth floor of the building. Armed police personnel who were present reportedly fled the area without engaging the attackers. Afghan security forces subsequently responded, leading to exchanges of gunfire that continued until the early morning hours. Hotel guests were instructed to barricade themselves in their rooms for safety, though some escaped by jumping from the hotel's windows. The attack and subsequent five-hour siege resulted in at least 21 fatalities and injured dozens of others. All nine attackers were killed during the incident. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
