On December 29, 2016, Narmang Singh (also known as Dilsoz), a local Sikh community leader and shopkeeper, was shot dead by unknown gunmen while on his way to work in Kunduz. This was the second deadly attack against members of Afghanistan's Sikh minority since September 2016. The killing prompted demands from the country's Sikh and Hindu minorities for an investigation into the targeting of their communities, whose numbers have drastically declined from an estimated 220,000 in the 1980s due to decades of conflict.
