Between June 23-26, 2016, fighting between Islamic State fighters and Afghan forces in Nangarhar province resulted in at least 12 deaths among Afghan security forces and civilians, with 18 others wounded. In Kowt district, as many as 25 homes were burned down and five civilians were reportedly kidnapped by Islamic State militants. Afghan officials claimed that more than 100 Islamic State fighters were killed during the three days of conflict, though these figures could not be independently verified.
