On January 20, 2017, an explosive device detonated as spectators were leaving a buzkashi match in the Khwaja Baran area of Khulm district. The blast killed three people, including anti-Taliban commander Haji Zmaray, his driver, and one civilian. Five others were wounded in the explosion, including one of the commander's bodyguards and three civilians. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack that targeted both a military figure and civilians attending a sporting event.
