On April 29, 2024, a targeted attacked occurred at the Imam Zaman Mosque in Mohammadia Town, a Shia community located in the Guzara district of Herat Province. Two armed assailants on a motorcycle armed with AK-47 rifles launched an attack on the mosque. During the time of the assault, the mosque was filled with people engaged in prayer. The attackers opened fire, resulting in the tragic loss of six lives, including a woman, a child, and four men. Additionally, two individuals were injured in the incident. The Islamic State of Iraq and Levant-Khorasan Province (ISIL-KP) subsequently claimed responsibility for the attack. They stated their target was “Rafida,” a term used derogatorily by extremist groups against Shia and Hazaras.
