Between February 9-11, 2017, a series of airstrikes conducted by international military forces in Sangin district killed 26 civilians and injured six others, predominantly women and children. The strikes targeted civilian homes housing extended families in three separate incidents: On February 9, an airstrike in the Mata Lakara area hit a civilian home adjacent to a building used by anti-government elements, killing eight children and one woman, along with nine anti-government fighters. On February 10, an airstrike in the Chinari area struck a house, killing 13 civilians (including nine children and three women) and injuring two others. On February 11, in the Haji Aminullah Shela area, an airstrike hit a civilian home, killing four civilians (three children and one woman) and injuring four others (three children and one woman). UNAMA reported these findings to Resolute Support, which rejected the civilian casualty allegations, claiming their investigations could not corroborate the incidents. UNAMA noted that information did not indicate ongoing ground engagements in the targeted areas at the time of the airstrikes, suggesting these were pre-planned operations rather than dynamic strikes during active combat.
