Between 800 and 1,000 civilians were killed on 12 April 1986 in the Andkhvoy District of Faryab Province during a ground operation carried out by PDPA-P armed troops with the help of Soviet Army bombardment. Numerous residences were demolished in the course of the attack. The operation was conducted to suppress the rebellion in the region and quell the indigenous anti-Soviet Mujaheddin factions.
