At approximately 12pm on December 6, 2011, a suicide bomber targeted a large crowd of Shia worshippers at the gate of the Abulfazl Shrine in Kabul. The attack occurred in the Murad Khani area, within Police District 2 of Kabul, during the commemoration of Ashura, a significant Shia observance. The explosion resulted in at least 55 fatalities and injured another 164 individuals. The Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Jhangvi stated that his group was responsible for the attack.
