- Summary of incident
On August 26, 2017, a suicide bomber detonated himself at the entrance of the Imam Zaman Mosque, a Hazara-Shia Mosque located in the Qalai-e-Najarha neighborhood of Khair Khana, a northern suburb of Kabul. The explosion facilitated the entry of three additional attackers who proceeded to enter the prayer hall and open fire on the worshippers gathered inside. The mosque, a two-story building, was filled with dozens of worshippers, including women and children. The assailants engaged in shooting, stabbing, and beheading before three of them detonated their explosives inside the mosque. The attack resulted in the deaths of between 28-40 individuals, including women and children, with another 90 people sustaining injuries. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant-Khorasan Province (ISIL-KP) claimed responsibility for the attack.
