On 12 May 2020, a suicide attacker detonated himself during the funeral ceremony of a former pro-government militia commander in Kuz Kunar (Khewa) District, Nangarhar Province, killing 32 civilians and wounding 133 others, some of whom remained in critical condition. An Afghan group affiliated with the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack.
