On May 9, 2017, an improvised explosive device (IED) killed the Parwan Provincial Ulema chief, who had been publicly critical of the Taliban, along with six children who were studying at his school. The Taliban claimed responsibility for this attack that deliberately targeted both a religious leader who opposed their ideology and the educational institution he ran.
