- Summary of incident
On August 02, 2017, Mirza Olang Village, a Hazara community located in the Sayyad District of Sar-e-Pol Province, came under attack by a joint force of ISIL-KP and Taliban militants. The assault occurred from three directions: Bilcheragh District of Faryab Province, Kohistanat District of Sar-e-Pol Province, and Qash Tapa District of Jawzjan Province. Following 48 hours of fighting, the government forces retreated, citing a lack of reinforcement and support. Subsequently, the village fell into the hands of extremist militants, who initiated the burning and destruction of homes and mosques before carrying out mass killings. The brutal massacre claimed the lives of at least 54 civilians, primarily targeted for their ethnic and religious affiliation. Additionally, 235 villagers including women, children and elderly people were taken hostage and later released with the intervention of local elders, while approximately 500 others were forcibly displaced from the village. According to the governor of Sar-e-Pol, the entire village was emptied of its residents following the mass killings. Three mass graves were discovered after government forces regained control of the area from ISIL-KP and Taliban forces.
