On October 17, 2017, Taliban suicide bombers and gunmen launched a complex attack on the police training center in Gardez, the provincial capital of Paktia, which also housed police and army regional headquarters. The attackers used captured unarmored police vehicles filled with explosives in their initial assault, followed by a similarly equipped Humvee in a second wave. The multi-phase attack killed at least 41 people in the initial reports, with total casualties including attackers and civilians estimated at over 80 dead and approximately 200 wounded.
