On January 28, 2017, anti-government elements opened fire on a private vehicle in Khan Abad district after it failed to stop when ordered to do so. The shooting killed all five occupants of the vehicle, including an Afghan National Army officer whom the attackers had reportedly intended to abduct, as well as four civilian passengers. This incident demonstrates the lethal consequences for civilians traveling with military personnel during attempted targeted attacks.
