- Summary of incident
In the Darazgul Hicha area of Jaghori district, a civilian named Zahir was subjected to arbitrary arrest and detention by Taliban authorities. Maulvi Anas, the local Taliban intelligence director, apprehended Zahir on allegations of purchasing a vehicle for popular uprising forces during the previous government's rule. Zahir was held in custody for a period of 14 days and nights, enduring persecution at the hands of Taliban officials. The detention appears to have been carried out without due process or formal charges, raising concerns about violations of legal rights and protections. The incident concluded when Zahir was released, but only after a payment of 500,000 Afghanis was made, suggesting an act of extortion by the detaining authorities. Following his release, Zahir was compelled to leave the area, indicating a form of forced displacement.
