On July 2, 2015, Taliban forces overran twelve security checkpoints in Jalrez district of Maidan Wardak Province, killing twenty-four Hazara Afghan Local Police (ALP) personnel. The ALP members had been assigned to secure the highway connecting central provinces to Kabul. The attack resulted in a 72-hour gun battle, during which forty Taliban fighters were also reportedly killed. Despite the proximity to Kabul, government reinforcements did not arrive throughout the prolonged engagement. Member of Parliament Arif Rahmani noted that Hazara soldiers appeared to have been specifically targeted in the attack.
