- Summary of incident
From August 10-15, 2018, the Taliban launched sustained attacks against Afghan Security Forces in Ghazni City. During the six-day battle, UNAMA verified 262 civilian casualties—79 killed and 183 injured—resulting from ground fighting and aerial operations. In addition to the broader civilian casualties, the Taliban conducted targeted killings including a public prosecutor and kidnapped an electoral candidate who was later found dead. This multi-day assault on the provincial capital resulted in one of the highest civilian casualty tolls from a single Taliban operation.
