On April 1, 2014, Hussain Nazari, a candidate for the Sar-e-Pul Provincial Council, along with nine companions, was abducted by unidentified armed men in Baghavi village, Sozma Qala District, Sar-e-Pul Province, during his election campaign. The group was divided into two, and each sub-group was either shot or beheaded by their captors. All the victims were Hazaras from Balkhab district. No group officially claimed responsibility for the killings. However, provincial authorities attributed the act to the Taliban.
