On November 25, 2018, armed soldiers from the National Directorate of Security (NDS) arrested Abdulghani Alipur, an anti-Taliban Hazara commander in Dasht-e-Barchi. This arrest sparked mass protests among Hazaras across different provinces, including Western Kabul, Mazar-e-Sharif, Bamyan, and Daikundi. Unfortunately, the government responded with violent crackdowns. As the police attempted to suppress the protests, the situation escalated, resulting in the deaths of at least five protesters at the hands of government security forces. Additionally, 50 individuals were injured, and 100 were arrested, including 23 teenagers under the age of 18.
