- Summary of incident
In the Dai Mirdad District of Maidan Wardak province, armed nomads (Kochies) conducted an attack on villages from May 15 to 18, 2010. The attack rapidly escalated into a confrontation with the defenseless Hazara villagers, which led to the destruction of over 50 homes, the death of six civilians, and the burning and destruction of dozens of hectares of cropland. The assault elicited a widespread response and protest from Hazara individuals, politicians, and civic activists, who demanded that the government take action to resolve the century-old conflict between Hazara villagers in Kochies. Nonetheless, the government could not implement concrete measures to resolve the issue, and the conflict persisted.
