On August 29, 2017, predawn airstrikes by NATO forces in the Bakhtabad area of Herat province killed nearly 30 people, including 15 civilians and 16 Taliban militants. Twelve others were injured in the attack. Initial reports indicated that 13 civilians in nearby houses were killed and eight others injured in the airstrike. Mohammad Rafiq Sherzai, spokesman for Herat Zonal Hospital, confirmed that the body of a boy and three injured people were brought to the hospital from the Bakhtabad locality, with two girls and a 26-year-old woman among the wounded.
