On January 1, 2017, a bomb detonated inside Imam Mohammad Baqir Mosque, a Shia Mosque situated in the 7th district of Herat. The blast resulted in the death of the mosque's Imam, Reza Sarwari, and injuries to seven other individuals. The explosion took place in a predominantly Shia neighborhood where Hazaras and other Shia community groups reside. No group or individual claimed responsibility for the attack.
