Incident description

On August 7, 1998, following renewed conflict with the Northern Front, Taliban forces entered Mazar-e-Sharif in Balkh Province. In the initial days, they detained and executed thousands of civilians, primarily Hazaras. Taliban forces declared a general massacre, targeting the city's Shia population. According to witnesses, the scale of the violence left bodies strewn across the streets, requiring days for the bodies to be removed to undisclosed locations.
